What is osteoporosis (brittle bone disease)?

Osteoporosis - brittle bone diseaseOsteoporosis (brittle bone disease) is a condition where there is loss of bone mineral density. As we get older, this occurs as a natural process and our bones become thinner because new bone is not being replaced as quickly as old bone is lost. This disease affects one woman in three and one man in twelve in the United Kingdom. Half of all affected people will experience a fracture by the time they are 70 years old and more than 150,000 fractures are caused yearly by this disease. Osteoporosis is a condition that can be prevented and treated in most diagnosed cases.

What is a DEXA scan?

Bone densitometry is a means of measuring bone density using a specialised low dose x-ray machine. The machine that we use for this examination is called a DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanner. This test is currently the most reliable means of assessing the strength of your bones and predicting your risk of fracture as well as monitoring the effects of treatment. It uses very low dose radiation to measure bone density in the hip and the spine.

DEXA machineWhat does the equipment look like?

The equipment consists of a large table housing an x-ray source and a pivoting arm on top of the table. A small, “thin” x-ray beam will be triggered to scan your hip and spine while the pivoting arm housing detectors will detect the changes in the x-ray beam.

How should I prepare for the examination?

No special preparation is required. However, it is helpful to wear trousers without a zip fastening so that you do not need to undress.

What will I experience during the examination?

At the examination, you will be required to lie on a table. The x-ray source underneath the table and a pivoting arm on top will move slowly over the selected area of the body and the metabolic activity of this area will be read. You will experience no pain during the examination and you will not need to undress, unless you are wearing clothes with a zip fastening. The procedure should take no longer than half an hour.
The radiographer will be sitting next to you to control the machine and you will be able to ask her questions during the examination.

How do I get the results?

Once the examination is complete, the results will be analysed by a radiographer using a computer. The results will be discussed with you and advice reguarding life style or diet will be given to you. A doctor will report the results and a copy will be sent to your general practitioner and a letter will be sent to you explaining the findings.
